SustainAbility, an ERM Group company, is a think tank and advisory firm that works to inspire and enable business to lead the way to a sustainable economy.
Rate the Raters is a project undertaken by them, as a way of better understanding “the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) ratings and to provide perspectives to help companies, investors, and other stakeholders make sense of and derive more value from ESG ratings.”
This report highlights the perspective of investors, shares interview insights, survey results, and how they use these ratings to evaluate ESG topics. They also put recommendations forward on how best to approach these ratings, so that investors can make the most informed decisions that can mitigate the least risk.

Where 2019’s report branding had ventured in a new direction, 2020’s design pushed Rate the Raters even further so that it would become bolder and more distinct than other reports in the sector.
Here, we used the five shapes previously used as a device to connote the various investors involved. Bigger, more complex shapes means more popular investor companies, with the extended lines indicating whether their views around specific subjects are increasing or decreasing.
Whilst these are used in a more abstract format, it meant we could create striking and more colourful visuals that would make the report more exciting, and legible to read throughout.
